The importance of a Pop Video has grown in the past 30/40 years. The first Pop video being a British band called Queen. There video for Bohemian Rhapsody was a promo, which apparently was never meant for mass consumption.
Most people have been lead to believe that Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was the first music video, however, Thriller was the first, and one of the most expensive music videos, to this day with a beginning, middle and end, it being over 10 minutes in duration.
Both of these videos helped to launch these artists into the charts and into the history of music, Michael Jackson's Thriller is still reguarded as the best music video to date.
More music today have videos that explot the female actress, using sex to promote the song. This is mostly found in R&B and dance videos. These videos fade very quickly in people's minds as they are no longer memorable. My opinion is that the music instustry and major corporations are creating the same type of music products, therefore the products become less memorable.
An artist who is trying to break that trend is Lady Gaga, known for her outragious outfits and her questionable sexuality, Lady Gaga has proven to the world that Pop doesn't have to be completely mainsteam and conformist.
Her videos are new and have been described as "a breath of fresh air to the pop world". I agree with this statement, I think she is paving the way for artists to show their creativity.

Pop Music - What is Pop?
Catherine and I began to do a timeline for the "History of Pop Music".
However, I noticed that the task was rather wide, as pop music could have began back when man was trying to create fire, could that be classed as popular music.
The guardian says in an article, "50 moments that shaped pop history" that the first moment to have changed pop history is 1954 - Elvis Presley records 'That's All Right Mama' at Sun Studios, Memphis.
However, I disagree. To know about the history of Pop Music, the definition has to be known. However, people's understanding of "pop" music, varies from background and opinion.
My understanding of Pop music is found the original abbreviation from "Popular Music" therefore I would say music in the top 40 today would be pop music, yet they can be sub classed into different genres. I also believe that Pop Music can be the Happy upbeat tunes generally performed by "One Hit Wonders" For example The Fast Food Rockers who dressed up in bright clothes and sang about there love of fast food chains.

There have been bands who make these happy upbeat songs, who have been labelled "Pop Bands" These usually consist of young either all girls or all boys, sometimes a mix, these members are young and attractive. Usually aimed at pre-teened girls. An example of this is Steps who had numerous hits like "Tragedy" cover of the Bee Gees original and 5,6,7,8.
They stayed around in the charts for the 90's then split in the early 00's. Which is stereotypical of the "Pop Band" label.

Early Planning
The lyrics of Breed 77's "Zombie" are all about the Iraq war. Several problems about making a music video are listed:-
- Budget, I can't afford to spend money of sets, costume and actors, therefore will have to keep budget in mind.
- Location, budget won't stretch far enough to get anywhere that resembles a battlefield, as I cannot drive, actors equipment and props could make it hard to travel on public transport to any location that isn't local.
- Messages, even though the song is an "anti-war" song, I do not want the video that I create to start preaching to it's audience, or become a political message, my video shall be to entertain, not to be used as propaganda.
- Other Issues, with the war in Iraq still ongoing, I do not wish for my video to reflect on that specific conflict, as some people who have lost people in that war may find it upsetting, I must keep that in mind at the later planning stages.

Permission
I knew what song I was going to be doing for my A2 coursework, therefore got onto the manager of Breed 77. To use there song "Zombie".

Hi Sarah – we are OK with this.
You strictly need permission from Universal Music Publishing as they represent Dolores O’Riordan’s copyrights.
However if I was you I would just get on with it as it is only for your coursework :)
Cheers
James
I recieved this e-mail from the manager of Breed 77, James Cassidy. I don't believe that getting in touch with Universal Records as getting in touch with big companies usually has little sucess, therefore it would not be worth my time.
